Indiana Pacers vs Detroit Pistons. On November 19, 2004, at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan. What the Associated Press describes as "the worst fight in NBA history" happened. With 45.9 seconds remaining to end the fourth time, Ben Wallace attempted a lay-up, but was defended foully by Ron Artest. Furious that he was hit when the match was almost settled, Wallace pushed Artest and a fight broke out on the court between several players. After it was sedated, a fan threw a drink at Artest while he was lying on the commentators table. (He sat there to calm down and isolate himself, apparently.) Artest immediately charged the fan (by hitting the wrong one, by the way), sparking a brawl between players and spectators that extended from the stands to the court.

After the game, the NBA suspended nine players for a total of 146 games, causing them to lose $ 11 million in salary. The conversation between Jackson and Artest in the locker room is historic: “Are we going to get in trouble?'' ''We will be lucky if we still have a job tomorrow''. Five players were charged with assault and eventually sentenced to one year of probation and community service. Five fans also faced criminal charges and were banned from attending Pistons home games for life. The brawl led to the NBA increasing security between players and fans and limiting the sale of alcohol during games.
